Bemotrizinol sunscreen just got FDA approval — the first new U.S. filter in 27 years, offering full UVA protection. Here’s what experts say.
There’s finally something new under the sun. For the first time in 27 years, the FDA has approved a new bemotrizinol sunscreen ingredient for over-the-counter use in the United States.
That ingredient is bemotrizinol, also called BEMT. According to three Stanford Medicine dermatologists, it offers real advantages over the sunscreens already sitting on U.S. shelves. Products containing it are expected to arrive in September.
What Exactly Is Bemotrizinol?
Bemotrizinol was developed by Swiss chemists back in the 1990s. It’s a large, oil-soluble molecule that sits on the skin instead of fully absorbing into it.
That’s actually the point. Bemotrizinol forms a protective layer that absorbs ultraviolet light and converts it into harmless heat, all while staying largely on the surface of the skin.
Why Bemotrizinol Sunscreen Is a Big Deal
From a pure sun-protection standpoint, bemotrizinol is a “game changer,” said Dr. Susan Swetter, the Mosbacher Professor in Dermatology at Stanford Medicine. She called it “the best broad-spectrum ultraviolet radiation filter available.”
Here’s the problem it solves. Most sunscreens claim broad-spectrum coverage, meaning they block both UVA and UVB rays. In reality, older U.S. sunscreens don’t cover the full UVA spectrum, leaving some skin-penetrating light unchecked.
“We have not had a good UVA filter on the U.S. market to date,” said Dr. Joyce Teng, a professor of dermatology at Stanford Children’s Health.

To put it simply: UVA has a longer wavelength (315–400 nanometers) and mainly causes premature aging, but it’s also linked to skin cancer. UVB has a shorter wavelength (280–315 nanometers) and is the primary cause of sunburn and direct DNA damage.
Older U.S. sunscreens only covered UVA up to about 370 nanometers. Bemotrizinol covers the entire UVA range, all the way to 400 nanometers.

“Bemotrizinol is a huge step forward compared to so many other things we’ve had,” said Dr. Zakia Rahman, a clinical professor of dermatology at Stanford Medicine.
Why Did Approval Take So Long?
Blame the regulatory system, not the science. Most countries treat sunscreen as a cosmetic. The U.S., however, classifies it as an over-the-counter drug, which requires strict safety and efficacy testing before approval.
Two pieces of legislation eventually cleared the path. The Sunscreen Innovation Act of 2014 created a formal review pathway, and the CARES Act of 2020 modernized the broader regulatory framework.
“It’s certainly been a greater-than-20-year effort to get superior ultraviolet filters incorporated into our sunscreens,” Swetter said.
Is It Safe? Here’s What the Testing Found
The extra wait wasn’t wasted time, according to the Stanford experts. Bemotrizinol has a real safety track record — it’s been used safely in other countries since around 2000.
As part of its review, the FDA looked at animal studies. Those studies found no evidence of increased cancer risk or endocrine disruption.
Human testing at the approved 6% concentration also found no concerning skin irritation. Absorption was a particular concern for pregnant women and children, but testing ruled that out too. “Since the bemotrizinol molecule is large, it does not cross the skin barrier easily, so that minimizes risk of systemic absorption,” Teng explained.
The FDA approved bemotrizinol for adults and for children as young as 6 months old. That’s a meaningful detail — and one dermatologists think could help lower skin cancer rates in future generations.
Beyond Protection: Why It Feels Better, Too
Sun protection is only half the appeal. Bemotrizinol also solves some long-standing complaints about how sunscreen actually feels.
It’s highly photostable, meaning it doesn’t break down quickly in sunlight. Compare that to avobenzone, a common U.S. chemical filter that breaks down in about 30 minutes and needs an extra stabilizing chemical just to keep working.
Because it lasts longer, bemotrizinol can be used in smaller amounts. That means less greasiness and no white residue — a common complaint with mineral sunscreens like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

Reapplication is still recommended roughly every two hours, regardless of which sunscreen you use.
Is Bemotrizinol “Reef Safe”?
“Reef safe” isn’t an officially regulated term, but the underlying concern is real. Some existing sunscreen chemicals, including oxybenzone and octinoxate, have been linked to coral bleaching.
Because of that, places like Key West, Hawaii, and Palau have banned those specific ingredients since 2019. As for bemotrizinol, the Stanford researchers say they aren’t aware of any evidence suggesting it harms the environment.
When Can You Buy It, and Will It Cost More?
DSM-Firmenich, the company behind bemotrizinol, plans to sell it under the brand name Parsol Shield starting in September. The company reportedly spent more than $18 million over two decades getting through the FDA process, including a study involving nearly 500 people.
As a reward, regulators gave the company 18 months of exclusive U.S. marketing rights. Pricing compared to existing sunscreens isn’t yet clear.
In the meantime, Stanford’s dermatologists note that U.S. consumers can already buy bemotrizinol-containing sunscreens from overseas retailers, or pick them up while traveling abroad.
The Bigger Picture: Better Sunscreen, More Compliance
The real hope isn’t just better chemistry — it’s better habits. Dermatologists believe bemotrizinol’s more pleasant feel will get more people to actually wear sunscreen consistently.
“If you have a sunscreen that’s going to stain your clothes or leave a white cast on your skin, or if it’s going to be greasy, most people don’t want to wear it,” Rahman said. “You need to reduce the barrier to entry, and bemotrizinol does that.”
The long-term payoff could be significant. Research suggests that consistent sun protection during the first 18 years of life could reduce adult skin cancer rates by roughly 80%.
“Starting young is going to be really important,” Swetter said, “and the recent FDA approval of bemotrizinol is very exciting.”
