The MacBook Pro M7 generation could bring a simpler, touch-first lineup, according to a new report. Apple is expected to drop its non-touch premium MacBook Pro models when second-generation touchscreen models arrive in 2027, leaving only the entry 14-inch MacBook Pro without a touch display. The claim comes from Bloomberg’s “Power On” newsletter, as reported by AppleInsider on 1 November. Apple has not confirmed it.
Where the MacBook Pro lineup stands today
Apple recently launched new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with PROLED XDR displays and touch-enabled screens. Pre-orders are open now, and the machines start shipping on 6 November.
Right now, the lineup has three layers:
- Touch models: the new PROLED MacBook Pros start at $2,899 for the 14-inch and $3,399 for the 16-inch.
- Non-touch premium models: the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pros stayed on sale after the touch models launched.
- Entry model: the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 starts at $1,999 and has no touch screen.
According to AppleInsider, the touch models carry a $400 premium over the current MacBook Pro models. The entry model offers more ports, higher performance and a better display than the MacBook Air, but lacks the features of the high-end machines.
What the report says about the MacBook Pro M7 lineup
According to the “Power On” report, the M5 Pro and M5 Max non-touch models will not stay around for long. When Apple introduces the second generation of touch MacBook Pros in 2027, it is expected to remove the non-touch premium models from the lineup.
Those second-generation touch models would use M7 Pro and M7 Max chips, with more emphasis on AI capabilities, AppleInsider says.
The entry 14-inch MacBook Pro would also be updated. It is expected to move to the M7 chip and adopt the new thinner, lighter design, but it would continue to lack a touch screen.
What it could mean for MacBook Pro prices
If the report is accurate, buyers in 2027 would face a clearer choice: the entry M7 model without touch, or a touch model with an M7 Pro or M7 Max chip.
AppleInsider calculates that if prices stay consistent, moving from the entry MacBook Pro to the cheapest touch model would cost a $900 premium. That is the gap between today’s $1,999 entry price and the $2,899 starting price of the 14-inch touch model.
The publication also notes that the move would not be unusual. Apple tends to keep previous generations on sale when there is enough difference between models, which can ease sticker shock and give enterprise buyers an option.
A rumor, not an announcement
None of this has been confirmed by Apple. AppleInsider rates the report as “likely,” but product plans, chip names and prices can change before launch. Pricing for 2027 models in particular is unknown.
In my view, the bigger story is the price gap. A $900 jump between the entry Pro and the first touch model would make the entry machine an even more important choice for many buyers.
