After enduring weeks of escalating pressure, speculation, and anxiety among the Democratic Party’s elite, President Joe Biden has announced his decision to step down from the 2024 presidential campaign.

In a formal declaration on Sunday afternoon, Biden expressed his conviction that withdrawing from the race was in the nation’s best interest, promising to later address the nation about his choice.
This decision comes after a time of intense internal and external debates, with many Democrats concluding that Biden’s chances of defeating former President Donald Trump were slim. Shortly after, Biden made an additional announcement supporting Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him at the head of the Democratic ticket.
Immediate support from several prominent Democrats, including Bill and Hillary Clinton, the Congressional Black Caucus, Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), has rapidly solidified behind Harris, indicating a collective desire within the party to quickly unite around her candidacy.
These endorsements, while not a guarantee for Harris’s nomination, could deter other leading Democrats from challenging her position, making her nomination seem almost assured. However, the outcome is uncertain, with some Democrats considering a “blitz primary” or a fully “open convention” model, where delegates have the freedom to back any candidate they choose.
This approach is viewed by some as chaotic, with the decision of whether to adopt such a strategy depending on if others decide to enter the race. What is clear, however, is that the presidential race is entering uncharted waters. Since the establishment of the modern nomination process in the 1970s, no nominee has withdrawn from the race before the convention.
Similarly, no nominee has ever entered the race so close to the November election. It’s crucial to pause and reflect on the dramatic shift in the race. Just a few months ago, President Biden held a commanding lead in the primaries, facing minimal opposition. Yet, his party support has rapidly diminished to the point where he is effectively left without the means to continue his campaign.
