Since Elon Musk acquired Twitter in 2022 and rebranded it as X, the social media platform has undergone significant transformation under his leadership. Musk’s followers on X have more than doubled, surpassing 220 million, a growth rate far outpacing the other top accounts on the platform, including celebrities like Taylor Swift. This extraordinary rise in Musk’s influence on X reflects a fundamental shift in how the platform operates and shapes discourse online.

Musk declared himself a ‘free speech absolutist’ upon acquisition, envisioning X as a haven for unrestricted dialogue. However, analyses reveal that rather than neutral facilitation of free speech, X disproportionately amplifies Musk’s own voice and content. This dynamic creates a striking asymmetry in influence, as noted by digital media scholars, making X feel like ‘Musk’s kingdom’ where his ability to direct public attention is unparalleled.

The platform’s user growth statistics illustrate this dominance: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s follower base grew by 21 million (25%), Donald Trump’s by around 12 million (14%), while Taylor Swift’s increased by only 3 million (3%) during the same period. Such numbers underscore Musk’s outsized role in shaping engagement and visibility on X.

Additionally, Musk’s engagement patterns have politically significant impacts. For example, German climate skeptic Naomi Seibt’s follower count surged after frequent interactions with Musk, demonstrating how his endorsements or replies can dramatically boost reach. Likewise, AfD party co-leader Alice Weidel experienced a surge from 230,000 to 2.2 million viewers on days Musk interacted with her content, illustrating the real-world political influence stemming from Musk’s online activity.

Under Musk, X has expanded beyond traditional microblogging. It now incorporates features like long-form posts, account monetization, audio-video calls, integration with AI-powered chatbots, job search functionalities, and premium verification subscription models. Many legacy Twitter features were removed or altered, aligned with Musk’s broader vision to develop X into an “everything app” similar to China’s WeChat, where social, financial, and communication services converge.

The platform also plans to introduce novel financial services, such as peer-to-peer payments, investments, and potentially an X credit or debit card, signaling a pivot towards enabling users to manage significant aspects of their financial life within X. CEO Linda Yaccarino emphasized these innovations as part of a future where users transact seamlessly on the platform.

Despite these ambitions, Musk’s reign over X has attracted controversy. Issues have included suspensions of journalists, the release of the so-called Twitter Files, designations of certain media outlets as “state-affiliated,” and ongoing challenges with misinformation, hate speech, and antisemitism. Following Yaccarino’s resignation in July 2025, the platform continues to grapple with balancing user engagement and content moderation.

In conclusion, Elon Musk’s stewardship of X has profoundly reshaped the platform’s social, political, and financial dimensions. His commanding presence on X underscores the power of social media ownership to influence public discourse and digital ecosystems, as X continues evolving into a multifaceted “super app” with widespread global impact.
