Operation Sindoor
India has launched a series of missile strikes-Operation Sindoor-against nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. This marked the largest peacetime missile attack between the two nuclear-armed neighbors and a dramatic escalation of the ongoing Kashmir conflict.
Background
The strikes were triggered by a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, on 22 April 2025, which killed 26 civilians. The Resistance Front, linked by India to Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility. India accused Pakistan of supporting the attack, leading to diplomatic expulsions, suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, and heightened military posturing on both sides.
Operation Sindoor: The Strikes
- India targeted nine locations in Pakistan’s Punjab province (including Bahawalpur and Muridke) and in Pakistani-administered Kashmir (Muzaffarabad and Kotli).
- The Indian Defense Ministry described the strikes as “focused, measured, and non-escalatory,” claiming only terrorist infrastructure was hit, not Pakistani military sites.
- Explosions and a blackout were reported in Muzaffarabad; at least three civilians were killed and 12 injured, according to Pakistani officials. Two mosques were reportedly struck, and Pakistan claimed to have shot down two Indian jets and a helicopter.
- India stated the strikes were a direct response to the Pahalgam attack and emphasized the precision of the operation.
Immediate Aftermath and Retaliation
- Pakistan condemned the strikes as targeting civilians and vowed to retaliate “at a time and place of its choosing.” Pakistani airspace was closed, and flights were suspended for 48 hours.
- Artillery exchanges were reported along the Line of Control. Pakistan claimed retaliatory strikes but provided limited details.
International and Domestic Reactions
- The United Nations, United States, Russia, China, Iran, and the UK called for restraint and urged both sides to de-escalate.
- President Donald Trump called the strikes “a shame” and expressed hope for a quick end to hostilities.
- Protests and heightened security advisories followed, with both countries enacting bans and diplomatic restrictions.
The 6 May 2025 strikes sharply escalated tensions between India and Pakistan, reminding the world of the region’s volatility and the risks of rapid military escalation. The episode highlights the urgent need for dialogue and diplomatic solutions to prevent further conflict and ensure lasting peace in South Asia.
